The Dollis Valley project with LA21

The Dollis Brook flows from Moat Mount to Hendon, where it is joined by the Mutton Brook, and continues via Brent Park to the Welsh Harp reservoir. The Dollis Valley is variously described as a green 'chain' or 'corridor'. It is an area of Metropolitan Open Land of borough-wide importance for nature conservation and wildlife. Barnet has commited itself to protecting and enhancing its open spaces. However there is no cohesive overall management of the Dollis Valley and the walk, since its inception (c.1990), has been badly neglected and is in places difficult to use. Both streams are severely polluted (two of the worst watercourses in North London according to the Environment Agency) and flood frequently leaving contaminated water on the footpath and surrounding land. The aims of the project are:

  • to improve the Dollis valley and the walk for the benefit of residents and wildlife;
  • to promote its use by walkers, ramblers and casual visitors;
  • to improve wildlife habitats;
  • to clean up the watercourses and raise water quality;
  • to establish a management plan, or series of integrated plans, for the area:
